About the Pre-College Program
The goal of the CMSTE Pre-College Program (PCP) is to broaden the pool of students
pursuing mathematics- and science-based majors and careers. The PCP actively recruits and
prepares students of average to above average ability in grades 6-12 who have not been
sufficiently exposed to mathematics- and science-based careers. The Program has enjoyed
seven years of success.
Because of the demonstrated success of CMSTE Pre-College students, the program is in great
demand by school districts, teachers, parents and students. They know that the programs
CMSTE offers students are of the highest caliber and challenge students to become active
learners of mathematics and science.
Goals
The CMSTE Pre-College Program seeks to:
Increase the pool of underrepresented students who graduate from North Carolina high
schools prepared to pursue careers in mathematics- and science-based fields.
Increase the representation of potential, first-generation college students in academic,
college-bound mathematics and science classes in high school.
Encourage students to consider careers in mathematics, the sciences, technology,
engineering and education.
Student Activities & Services
All activities of the CMSTE Pre-College Program are academically intensive supplements to
the regular school year program that help students improve and refine their
problem-solving and analytical skills. Students receive individual and group instruction
from university faculty members and master public school teachers; participate in
laboratory and field work; interact with business scientists and engineers; and explore
team approaches to learning. Over 1,600 students from more than 50 North Carolina middle
and senior high schools currently participate in the program.
Activities include:
CMSTE Saturday Academy-12 Saturdays
throughout the academic year in which participants develop their skills in mathematics,
science and communication.
Summer Scholars Program- a 4-week
session of math/science projects, computer training, problem solving exercises and
accelerated English courses.
Parent Involvement in PIE
clubs and CMSTE Pre-College Advisory Committees- Parents
also are encouraged to participate in seminars and workshops
such as Family Math/Science and CMSTE Saturday Academies.
Other Activities & Services
Teacher Activities
Teachers associated with the CMSTE Pre-college Program receive intensive in-service
education in using methods and materials to help attract and retain first-generation
college students in science and mathematics courses. The teacher education component
builds on and includes participation in several successful models:
EQUALS: It is a national
program addressing the problem of under representation of females in mathematics and
science. The training consists of intensive in-service programs for teachers, emphasizing
a hands-on approach to mathematical concepts.
Mathematics, communication and
critical thinking skills: This training involves experiential learning, problem-solving,
and analytical skills.
Teacher planning sessions: Lead
teachers hold monthly meetings to consolidate their learnings.
