Summer Ventures in Science and Mathematics (SVSM) is a cost-free, state-funded program for
academically talented students who may pursue careers based in science and mathematics.
The program brings rising juniors and seniors together in residential settings for four
weeks of intensive study.
A statewide program of the University of North Carolina system, SVSM is administered by
the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics. Six campuses of the university
system--including UNC Charlotte--host the SVSM institutes. Each campus has its own
director. Dr. David Pugalee, Assistant Professor in the College of Education, is the
Director of the UNC-Charlotte program.
Curriculum
SVSM supplements high school and university courses, taking students beyond the
traditional boundaries of high school science and mathematics. Students are instructed by
university professors and master high school teachers working with professionals from
other institutions, government, and industry. Students learn experimental design,
laboratory skills, instrumentation, mathematical modeling, strategies in mathematical
problem solving and exploratory data analysis. Moreover, students learn while they are
engaged in specific scientific and mathematical activities of interest to them.
Courses
The following is a listing of possible SVSM course work. Each year the courses will
vary.
Admissions
Admission to SVSM is limited to rising high school juniors and
seniors whose custodial parents or guardians established legal residence in North Carolina
no later than December 1, 1995. Selection is based on academic ability, science and
mathematics motivation, and emotional maturity. Consideration is given to students whose
abilities are not accurately reflected in grades and standardized test scores, such as
those for whom English is a second language and those who are hearing impaired or have
cerebral palsy.
An admissions committee made up of professionals in education, science and mathematics
selects the approximately 600 finalists invited to participate in SVMS. Each finalist is
assigned to a specific campus based upon the availability of the student's preferred
academic program.
Application forms are sent to high school mathematics and science department heads and
counseling offices in mid-October and application deadline is the end of January.
Interested students may also contact the Mathematics & Science Education Center at UNC
Charlotte for information about the program and application forms.

Residential Life
Students live in dormitories under the supervision of qualified
residential advisors who provide guidance and plan social, athletic, cultural and
co-curricular activities. All of the institutes operate under statewide guidelines
regarding curfews, dating, sign-outs, and visitors. Additional rules may be established as
needed at the respective sites. Students may not have cars on campus, and drugs, alcohol,
weapons are strictly prohibited. Students who do not obey the rules or who fail to take
advantage of the academic opportunities offered by the program will be dismissed.
Cost
Room, board and tuition are provided without charge to the resident. Each student's
family is responsible for a medical examination prior to enrollment, for transportation to
and from the site, for pocket money, and for any medical charges incurred by the student
during the program. Limited funds are available to help cover these expenses for students
with severe financial need.
