On Monday, March 8, 2004, the UNC Charlotte Departments of Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics
and Optical Science,
and the Center for Mathematics, Science, and Technology Education are cooperatively sponsoring another exciting single day of
academic competitions for high school students in Mecklenburg County and surrounding
counties.

We regret that we cannot accept late or onsite registrations. Please do not request to
register after the registration deadline of January 30, 2004, or to be allowed to pay after
the payment deadline of February 27, 2004. You will be charged $5.00 for each student
participating in each contest. (Individual written physics contest fees will cover fees
for physics Olympics for those students participating in both physics contests.) You will
be sent a payment invoice from our office to return, along with your check for the
appropriate amount, to be received by our office by Friday, February 27, 2004. Upon our
receiving
your payment, we will send you a payment receipt to indicate that you are registered to
participate, along with parking and other final information.
The competition schedule will permit your students to test their skills individually in
mathematics (Comprehensive or Algebra II) or science or both. The schedule for the testing
periods is such that students may not compete in both the chemistry and physics contests,
nor is it possible for students to participate in both the physics Olympics event and
either of the mathematics contests. Both mathematics contests will be held simultaneously,
so students must choose between the Comprehensive and the Algebra II contests. Awards for
participants will include trophies, cash, books and scholarships.
Chemistry
Contact: Cheryl
Dammann, Ph.D., UNC Charlotte
The chemistry contest is open only to students who are currently enrolled in a first-year
chemistry course. For schools with block scheduling, students who completed
first-year chemistry in the fall semester and are not taking a follow-up in the
spring semester are eligible to compete. Advanced and advanced placement students are not eligible. There will be
two divisions: one for Mecklenburg County students, and one for those outside the county.
Mathematics
Contact:
Harold Reiter, Ph.D., UNC Charlotte
The mathematics competition, including both Comprehensive Mathematics and Algebra II
contests, is the twenty-fourth annual math contest at UNC Charlotte and is part of statewide mathematics
competitions. The Comprehensive contest is open to all high school students. The Algebra
II contest is open to students who have been enrolled in Algebra II during the current
academic year.
Students may only participate in one mathematics contest (the two will be held
simultaneously). Each school desiring to compete for the overall mathematics
trophy must enter a team, with five students minimum constituting a team, in both
contests. Due
to space considerations, each school must limit their student participants to only
twenty for both contests combined (five minimum per contest to compete for the
overall math trophy). Schools may
enter fewer than five students (though not a team) to compete for individual
trophies and to potentially qualify for contests at the state level.
For more information about the mathematics competitions, contact Harold Reiter
at hbreiter@email.uncc.edu or see
http://www.math.uncc.edu/~hbreiter. The top
seven percent of the comprehensive contestants will move on to the state comprehensive
exam at the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics, scheduled for April
22, 2004. For
more information about the state comprehensive exam, see the state contest website at
http://courses.ncssm.edu/goebel/statecon/state.htm
You may also contact Mr. John Goebel at (goebel@ncssm.edu).
The runoffs in Algebra I, Algebra II and Geometry are set for May 6, 2004. The top 10% in Algebra II advance to the runoff contest (see the
above-mentioned state contest website).

Physics
Contact:
William Melton, Ph.D., UNC
Charlotte
The physics contest [both Individual (Written) and Physics Olympics teams] is open only to students
who are currently enrolled in first year physics. No student can participate in
the UNC Charlotte Physics competition more than one year. The Olympics team competition
will involve physics-related team activity.
